Biografia
Franco ha conseguito il diploma in Fisica presso l'Università degli Studi di Trento (Italia) con una tesi sull'analisi dei dati per antenne di onde gravitazionali e il dottorato in fisica presso l'Università di Innsbruck (Austria) specializzandosi nella sua tesi sull'analisi multivariata dei dati spettrometrici. All'inizio della sua carriera scientifica è stato coinvolto in progetti relativi all'ottica ionica ed elettronica, spettrometria di massa e spettroscopia: studi di foto-frammentazione e fotoionizzazione su fasci molecolari, indagini in spettrometria di massa tandem di frammentazione indotta da superficie di molecole e cluster e misure spettroscopiche di composti organici volatili emessi dalle piante. Dal 2000 è ricercatore presso l'Istituto Agrario di S. Michele all'Adige-Italia (ora Fondazione Edmund Mach) dove ha creato una struttura basata su PTR-MS per applicazioni agroindustriali.
Ad ottobre 2019 è diventato capo gruppo del gruppo di ricerca qualità sensoriale presso il Dipartimento di Qualità Alimentare e Nutrizione della Fondazione Edmund Mach.
Attività di Ricerca
Attualmente studia l'applicazione della spettrometria di massa a iniezione diretta per il rilevamento di composti volatili nella scienza e tecnologia alimentare e in agronomia: caratterizzazione rapida del prodotto, monitoraggio del processo in linea, correlazione del profilo dei composti aromatici degli alimenti con analisi sensoriale e genomica e misurazioni dello spazio del naso. La sua attività comprende inoltre analisi statistiche e metodi di data mining applicati a dati spettrometrici e sensoriali. È stato coautore di oltre 100 articoli su riviste ISI.
